The film, In The Light Of Reverence documents the Native American struggle to perserve sacred lands that are centers of spirituality.

  • Highlights from the PBS press release of In the Light of Reverence:

" While Native American activists and healers speak eloquently of the land's spiritual importance to Indian survival, a coalition of miners, developers, local businesses, and recreational enthusiasts protest what they see as their exclusion from public lands.

'The film is really about a clash of world views,'says director McLeod. 'One sees the land as property to be profited from, the other as a source of sacred meaning. For over a hundred years, Native American religions and ceremonies were banned. Even now their sacred sites receive no protection.'

Adds co-producer Maynor: 'Vine Deloria talks in the film about how American society is founded on rights, while Native American tribes are communities founded on responsibilities to the natural world. The question is whether it's an unbridgeable difference.' "

  • Malinda Maynor is a Lumbee Indian from North Carolina who has made several shorts about her native culture that have aired on public television. A graduate of Harvard University and of Stanford University's documentary masters program, Maynor is a recipient of a 2001 Rockefeller Film and Video Fellowship and is pursuing a Ph.D in History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
